Discussion:
Corel Draw 10 & selection annoyances
(too old to reply)

Hello,

I've been using Corel Draw 10 for a year or so. Before that I used Corel
Draw 5 & then 9. Version 10 has several annoying characteristics when
selecting objects. 1. Even when zoomed in to an object, Corel Draw likes
to select large rectangles even when they're not visible. I frequently add
borders and title block to document silkscreen artowork and almost always,
I'll zoom into an object and Corel Draw will slect the border that isn't
even on the screen.

2. Sometimes my mouse wheel functions as a zoom control when I roll it and
sometimes it pans the drawing when I roll it. I'm not pressing the wheel.
This behavior seems inconsistent.

3. When I have the object manager pull down docked I get inconsistent action
when I try to select a layer for visibility or print. If I try to toggle
visibility, sometimes it works, and sometimes it "double pumps". I find
that I must first click in the pull down area and then it's more consistent.
This never happened in earlier versions.

4. Simlilar behavior occurs when selecting the zoom tool. Sometimes I must
click on the drawing page for the cursor to change to zoom, and sometimes I
don't have to.

I'm trying to figure out if it's me or if something changed. I never had
this trouble in version 5 or 9. These oddities slow me down quite a bit.
Especially item 1. I must turn off the offending layer in order to control
small objects.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Kyle

Kyle,

I'm in a lazy mood today, so no opening of Corel to double-check, but straight
from memory :

There is a setting in Corel "treat all objects as filled" somewhere in settings.
Most likely this is the setting that is bothering you, making you selecting
rectangles that only have outside pen and no fill. Turning this setting off will
improve things. Getting front and back settings in a decent order on one layer
will also improve selecting. Anything not needed working on can best be sent to
"back".

Also it helps to read a little bit around the screen. One of the things it says
when your selection tool is on, is "alt-click digs". Meaning that if you keep
ALT pressed each click will present you another object that is located under the
cursor.

In complex situations, where it is hard to get everything needed in one
selection, you can sometimes work to your advantage by overselecting at first
and - keeping SHIFT down - deselecting what is too much in your selection.
Working in reverse so to say.

Also don't forget the CTRL-click to separately change a setting in an item that
belongs to a group, without ungrouping an regrouping.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the reply. I'll try the "treat all objects as filled" and see if
that works. I've played around with the order before but now that you
mention it, I'll move the border to the back. I have used the alt key for
digging and it works pretty well. I also use the shift key for selecting
multiple items. Any ideas on item 3? It's almost like you have to now tell
it which window to focus on. Maybe there's a setting for that. Thanks for
the tips. I'll let you now how it works out.

Kyle,

Active and unactive layers can conflict with visible/unvisible (you shouldn't be
working on invisible layers should you) but there are some issues with Corel
also. I sometimes find Corel not responding to a toolclick in the window, as if
the window is not active and I have to give a second one to get the command
started. Your problem might be related.
